Job Summary:
Trillium is seeking a SMID Portfolio Manager & Research Analyst to join its investment team in Boston. This role will strengthen portfolio management and research capabilities for Trillium’s ESG Small/Mid Cap Core Strategy and requires both portfolio management experience and SMID fundamental research experience. The successful candidate will contribute to investment performance through portfolio construction, risk management, company research, investment debate, client and prospect engagement, and ongoing collaboration with Trillium’s equity research, ESG research, and Advocacy teams.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Contribute to the day-to-day management of Trillium’s ESG Small/Mid Cap Core Strategy, including portfolio construction, monitoring, risk management, and implementation of strategy-specific investment objectives.
- Conduct generalist SMID fundamental equity research, including company analysis, investment thesis development, valuation assessment, risk review, and values alignment and ESG integration.
- Act independently within Trillium’s established investment process for portfolio construction and sustainable and responsible stock selection, including responsibility for adherence to strategy risk parameters, client guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate regularly with equity research analysts, ESG research analysts, and Advocacy specialists on bottom-up idea generation, company diligence, ongoing assessment of active holdings, and potential additions or removals from Trillium’s Approved List.
- Participate actively in investment team discussions, including portfolio reviews, research meetings, Investment Management Committee discussions, and constructive investment debate.
- Contribute to client, prospect, consultant, and intermediary meetings by articulating Trillium’s investment philosophy, strategy positioning, performance drivers, market outlook, and sustainability integration.
- Support sales and marketing initiatives by contributing to strategy-related materials, due diligence responses, and investment communications as needed.
- Mentor junior investment team members and contribute to the development of a collaborative, high-performing research and portfolio management culture.
- Represent the firm in industry conferences, client events, prospect meetings, and other external forums as appropriate.
- Collaborate with senior members of the investment team on enhancements to the firm’s investment process, research practices, portfolio construction tools, and sustainable investing integration.
- Provide documentation of investment decisions, trading rationale, research conclusions, and portfolio actions consistent with Trillium’s internal process and compliance expectations.
- Report to the Managing Director of Portfolio Management or other designated investment leadership.
Qualifications:
- 15+ years of relevant investment industry experience, including demonstrated experience in SMID equity investing, portfolio management, fundamental research, portfolio construction, and risk management.
- Proven track record as an investment professional, including documentation of historical investment management performance, decision-making process, and repeatable investment discipline.
- Strong generalist SMID research capability, with the ability to evaluate companies across sectors, assess business quality, analyze financial statements, develop valuation frameworks, and identify material risks and opportunities.
- Demonstrated experience with, or clear commitment to, sustainable and responsible investing, including the integration of ESG factors into fundamental research and portfolio decision-making.
- Ability to contribute effectively as both a Portfolio Manager and Research Analyst in a collaborative, team-based investment culture.
- Strong investment judgment, intellectual curiosity, and ability to engage constructively in investment debate.
- Clear and concise written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate investment views to internal teams, clients, prospects, consultants, and other external audiences.
- Proven collaboration skills and genuine interest in working in a team environment.
- Willingness to mentor junior colleagues and contribute to the professional development of the broader investment team.
- CFA charter holder and/or MBA preferred.
- Competence with Microsoft Office, Bloomberg, FactSet, MSCI, and other investment research, risk, and portfolio management tools.
Compensation:
The base salary range for this role is expected to be $200,000–$250,000, with eligibility for a performance-based bonus.
